Apollo Belvedere

Lost wax bronze replica.

Presumably made by the greek artist Leocheres at the end of IV century B.C. The original is displayed in the Vatican Museums, Vatican City. The statue represents God Apollo who has just overtaken the serpent Python, a monster recently ravaging the coast of Delphos, in Greece.
It is so called "Belvedere", because when found in 1489, it was immediately installed in the "Cortile Belvedere", the courtyard linking the Pope's summerhouse residence to the Vatican Palace.
The statue gave the name to the courtyard, "Belvedere" meaning in italian " a true beauty to see"!
