The Bremen Town Musicians - How a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster chased away a band of robbers.
A donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster had become old and therefore useless to their owner. The four animals decided to go together to the large city of Bremen, where they intended to earn their daily bread as street musicians.
As they were on their way, they came to a dark, dark forest. Since the road to Bremen was still long, they decided to spend the night here. Shortly afterwards they saw a small house with a burning light and a table laden with many delicacies. Around the table sat a gang of brigands who were eating roast meat and drinking wine. Because they were so hungry, the animals decided to chase the bandits away. And so they came up with a plan.
The donkey had to lean against the window with its front paws, the dog jumped onto the back of the donkey, the cat climbed onto the dog, and finally the rooster flew up and landed on the cat's head. Having done this, at a given signal they all began their frightening concert together: the donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat meowed and the rooster crowed. Then they rushed into the room and the frightened bandits fled in terror into the woods. Satisfied, the animals sat down at the table, ate and drank as much as they wanted and then went to sleep.
After midnight, the bandits saw from afar that no lights were burning in the house anymore and so they went back. The chief sent one of his men inside to see if they could get back in. The robber slipped into the house and lit a match to see better. But the cat jumped in his face, hissing and scratching. Out of fear the brigand fled through the back door, but there lay the dog which bit his leg. The donkey gave him a powerful kick with his hooves and the rooster, awakened by the commotion, squawked after him. The bandit dressed for the holidays told the boss that the house was haunted by ghosts. From then on the bandits no longer dared to return to the house, but the four musicians from Bremen were so happy with it that they no longer wanted to leave.
