Adam and Eve’s family
The story begins in the upper left corner with Adam and Eve sitting in front of a hut with their young sons, Cain and Abel.
Cain and Abel in the Fields
At the bottom left of the panel, Cain is shown plowing the soil as a farmer. Above him in the middle ground, Abel, a shepherd, looks over his flock of sheep.
Cain and Abel make offerings to God
The story continues in the far distance, with the brothers offering their sacrifice to God. God looks favorably on the offer from Abel, but not the one from Cain.
Cain murders Abel
Here Cain slays Abel moments after God accepted Abel’s sacrifice of meat but rejects Cain’s offering of fruit.
God searches for and curses Cain
The story continues with God looking for Abel, to whom Cain famously answers “ Am I my brother’s keeper?” God then curses Cain to wander the earth forever.
