David and Goliath panel from the Gates of Paradise

The ninth panel of the Gates of Paradise tells the story of David, who frequently appears in Florentine art of the period as a symbol of the city and an example of unlikely victory against seemingly unbeatable opponents. David is depicted in the foreground, framed by crowds of soldiers amid battle, as he cuts off the giant Goliath’s head. Above him, King Saul stands triumphantly in his chariot as he leads his troops. The narrative moves forward in the background of the landscape, where David and his followers bring Goliath’s head into the walled city of Jerusalem.
