Solomon greets the Queen of Sheba:
The Queen of Sheba hears of King’s Solomon wisdom and journeys to Israel to test him with questions. In the center of the panel, Solomon extends his left hand to the Queen of Sheba to welcome her.
The pair’s attendants look on:
The Queen’s attendants look on in the foreground of the vast hall of Solomon’s court. Although the Queen arrived with a great entourage of attendants, spices, precious stones and exotic animals, she was nevertheless enchanted by Solomon’s wealth.
Special Notes:
There is some very complex special effects in this panel which Ghiberti deals with. The relief is actually very shallow but Ghiberti creates the impression of extraordinary depth in the cross vaults of the central building.
