The famous neoclassical Italian sculptor Antonio Canova realized two statues of wrestlers: Creugas and Damoxenos. The myth says that they had equal strength and so the fight could have been going on for hours. Eventually, the two wrestlers agreed to take one last blow from on another: Creugas struck Damoxeons on the head, while Damoxenos struck Creugas on his intestines, killing him. Damoxenos was disqualified and Creugas was posthumously declared the winner.
Here Canova represents Damoxenos, naked, while he’s hitting his enemy. The artist realizes the sculpture for the Octagonal Courtyard in the Vatican Museums, that Napoleon had rob.
