Michelangelo has the reputation for being the greatest artist of all-time. He was an architect, a painter and a sculptor. His most famous artwork is the David, Renaissance and Florentine symbol. It’s considered one of the most beautiful sculpture in the world.
This is the Roman god Bacchus, known as Dionysus by Greeks. He’s represented, as usual, with a garland of pampini and clusters of grapes. Bacchus, god of wine (but also of theatre, of fertility, of ritual madness etc.), is drinking from the cup in his hand, while in the other hand he’s holding a tiger skin. There’s a satyr behind him, who is stealing and eating some grape.
The god is a little bit inebriated and has a sensual posture. Greeks used to mix water with wine because drinking pure wine and being drunk was considered a thing for barbaric and weak people.
