在孔雀石上的镀金的大力士Hercules与野猪

Lost wax bronze replica.

Author: Giambologna
Period: 1576 ca.

The original masterpiece is now conserved inside the Kunstishstorische Museum in Wien.

The capture of the Erymanthian Wildboar was the fourth labour by Hercules in the myth of the Twelve Labours.
The gigantic wildboar was reavaging the region of Arcadia and Hercules was called on to capture the beast alive. He eventually managed to bring the animal into the deep snow where the wildboar exausted, was captured.
The series of little statues by Giambologna depicting the tweleve labour was commissioned by Francesco I de' Medici.
We know for sure that Giamboogna was deeply inspired by the ancient greek marble wildboard sculpture present inside the Uffizi Gallery as well as the by the studies he made inside the grandukes' zoological park, where Francesco I had many exotic and non-exotic animals.
