Apoxiomenos

The Apoxiomenos is a Roman copy from an original Greek sculpture. The original one was in bronze, instead of the Roman copy that was in marble, as we see here.
The sculpture represents an athlete scraping sweat and dust from his body, the name “Apoxyomens” literally means “the scraper”. He’s represented naked, like all Greek athletes. The external beauty corresponded to the interior one for Greeks, as the famous motto says “kalos kai agathos” (beautiful and therefore good), this is why physical training was so important. It was greatly celebrated during Olympic Games, when all the wars and the hostilities were stopped.
