The woman sleeping on the hammock is the masterpiece by the Florentine sculptor Antonio Frilli. The artist, who started his career by realizing cemeteries monuments, then specialized in carving marble and alabaster. His high results and achievements brought him to international fame. He opened in 1860 his studio in via dei Fossi, where Frilli Gallery has still today its headquarters.
In the early 20th century the sculpture, realized from one single block of selected Carrara marble, won the Grand Prize of St. Louis, Missouri. There are several versions of this sculpture and one of them was sold by Sotheby’s.
The artwork inspired a novel by Gary Rinehart, that tells about the statue owner’s events.
