Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813-1883), was a composer, poet, librettist, theatre director, conductor and German essayist. He is recognized as one of the most important musicians of all ages, in particular of romance. Wagner is especially known for the reform of musical theatre. He created a total theatre, a stylistic union of poetry, sound and acting, that is, a work in music that enclosed all forms of art, including architectural and scenographic elements. Unlike most other opera composers, Wagner, self-taught, always wrote the booklet and screenplay for his work.
Wagner's compositions, especially those of his last period, are relevant for their contrapuntal weaving, rich chromatism, harmonies, orchestration and for the use of the Leitmotiv technique: musical themes associated with people, places or feelings , and was also the main precursor of modern musical language.
His physiognomic traits are known thanks to many portraits transmitted to future generations among which, the best known, is the portrait executed by Pierre Auguste Renoir of the great musician. In this bronze he is represented in very elegant clothes, with combed hair apart and a very serious look that is accentuated by thick eyebrows and frowns.
