Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), was a Polish composer and pianist. He was one of the great masters of romantic music, sometimes called “piano poet”, whose poetic genius is based on a professional technique that is unequaled in his generation. During the last eighteen years of his life, he gave only about thirty public performances, preferring the more intimate atmosphere of the salons. He lived and maintained himself thanks to the sale of his compositions and with the teaching of the piano, for which the demand was consistent. Chopin was in friendship with Franz Liszt and was admired by many of his contemporaries, including Robert Schumann. For most of his life, Chopin suffered from ill health. He died in Paris in 1849, of tuberculosis.
His innovations in style, musical form and harmony and his association of music with nationalism, his love, life and early death have made Chopin a myth of romance. He has been the subject of numerous films and biographies with different levels of historical accuracy but also of many pictorial and sculptural representations.
