The original sculpture wasn’t’ in marble but in bronze. It’s a Roman copy made after a Greek original attributed to Lysippos. It was found during the digging of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 18th century. The statue represents the god Hermes (among Romans knows as Mercury) seated on a stone.
He was the protector of trade and the messenger of gods. He’s characterized by winged boots.
