Lost wax bronze replica from original mold.
Author: Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi (1460-1528)
Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi was called the Ancient for his ability to reproduce in small format, mainly using bronze and gilded bronze, ancient statues of the Greco-Roman era.
Born in Mantua, he had a goldsmith training and was soon hired at the court of the Gonzaga family. His bronzes were famous for their excellent workmanship, chisel and typical black patina. Often his sculptures were enriched with details in golden patina and with glazed eyes, typical characteristics of the sculptures of the Greek era. He was one of the first sculptors to understand the economic value of being able to replicate his pieces: he in fact kept the wax models for reproductions. the original masterpiece is kept at the Bargello National Museum in Florence.
