Athena, often cited with the epithet of Pallas, was the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, craftsmanship and war. Moreover, Athens was considered as patron and protector of various cities throughout Greece, in particular Athens, from which it takes its name. This divinity would later be translated into the Roman goddess Minerva.
It was also known as Polia and Poliouchos (from the polis, which means 'city-state'), and her temples were usually on top of a fortified acropolis in the central part of the city. The Parthenon of the Acropolis of Athens is dedicated to her.
Since the Renaissance, Athena has become an international symbol of wisdom and art. Artists and Westerners have often used Athena as a symbol of freedom and democracy.
The statue was originally located in Paros and dated from the 4th century BC. Now it belongs to the collection of the Louvre Museum, in Paris.
