Giovanni Maria Benzoni was an Italian neoclassical sculptor. He was born near Bergamo and then moved to Rome, where he worked for the most part of his life. His first important replica was after a Canova’s sculpture, then he specialized in realizing replicas and statues for Grand Tourists who came in Italy. That’s why his artworks are all over the world.
The sculpture of Love e Psyche is a homage to Canova and it was frequently reproduced. The artist chooses an unusual moment of the myth: Amore was waking up by Psyche, he was angry and he wanted to go away, but Psyche tried to stop him.
Benzoni realized eight copies of this artwork, one of them is in the Hermitage.
