Lost wax bronze replica mounted on a Chiavari marble base.

Author: Michelangelo (1475-1564)
Period: 1524-1531
The two statues, allegorical representations of Dawn and Sunset, were designed for the tomb of Lorenzo d'Urbino, within a much more majestic project of building a monumental chapel for the Medici family. The original masterpieces are inside the Medici Chapels in the Church of San Lorenzo, Florence.
The two statues are located at the base of the tomb of Lorenzo d'Urbino. Alba seems to represent a newly awakened figure, with a bitter expression on her face that shows all the anxiety for the future of a new day; Sunset instead represents the painful inertia of a man who is moving towards the end of his life.
