Hippo Ballerina first version by Bjorn Okholm Skaarup

Columbine and Harlequin are two characters from the late-Renaissance “Commedia dell'arte” and have maintained their allure as popular motifs for painters and sculptors ever since. That loving couple's masculine virtue and feminine grace inspired this rendition of the timid and good-hearted rhino Harlequin and the sensuous and agile hippo Columbine.
It's Carnival, a celebration of life, where beneath skirts and ruffs, beyond colours and cast bronze, vibrates the passionate tribute to the great Degas and his bronze ballerina with the tissue tutu, “Petite danseuse de quatorze ans”. There's also a passionate homage to the work of that great master of pencil-drawn dreams, Walt Disney.
The famous Hippo Ballerina has developed a tendency for acrobatics and balancing acts. It is immortalized is one of the many positions for which the dancers are celebrated. The renowned sculpture of this Danish genius goes beyond the grace and lightness of classic poses to become true essence, weightless, poised on the suspended tether with the delicacy of a feather.
