Farnese Hercules

Lost wax bronze replica.

Author: Lysippos
Period: IV century B.C.
This state takes its name from the Farnese family, one of the richest and most important Roman families from which an entire dynasty of Popes descends. It was Alessandro Farnese, better known as Pope Paul III (1534 - 1549), who built the famous Palazzo Farnese, now home to one of the largest art collections in the world, the Farnese Collection.
This gigantic block of marble was found in 1546 during some excavations at the Baths of Caracalla, excavations that were sponsored by Pope Paul III. The Baths of Caracalla are one of the largest and best preserved thermal complexes dating back to Roman times, a true example of the magnificence of the Roman Empire. The author of the original work was Lysippus. The original masterpiece is now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
