Venus with the apple

Thorvaldsen was a neoclassical sculptor. His works are inspired by Greek mythology. Here it represents a Venus with an apple. In the Homeric epic the apple is the fruit of discord. According to the myth, Eris, goddess of discord, threw it on the table where some deities were feasting, saying it was destined for the most beautiful goddess. Among the three goddesses who claimed it there was also Venus, who eventually managed to win it.
