Antonio Canova was a famous neoclassical sculptor, he worked both in Italy and in other countries. He was particularly good at rendering the nudes and the delicate draperies that covered them.
Ballerinas are one of her favorite subjects thanks to their light and elegant shapes. Here the dancer is portrayed in a very delicate and sophisticated pose: the young girl holds both tiny hands resting on her hips with extreme grace, and seems intent on dancing a light dance.
