The work is a clear reference to the Greek statue attributed to the sculptor Callimachus and dated to the end of the 5th century BC, known from numerous copies or reworkings of Roman sculpture. The sculptural type is also referred to as "Aphrodite of Fréjus" or as "Venus Genitrice". Aphrodite is depicted standing covered in a long robe, but with uncovered left shoulder and breast. In his left hand he holds an apple, perhaps Paris's golden apple: in this case it would be interpreted as a winning Aphrodite (of the beauty contest between the goddesses). The statuary type has also been interpreted as an Aphrodite protector of brides on their wedding day.
