Doriforo

The bronze statue is a clear reference to the marble sculpture dating from the end of the 2nd century BC. at the beginning of the 1st century BC approximately, preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The sculpture is the best Roman copy, found in Pompeii, of an original bronze Doriforo ("spear bearer") of the classical age, made by the classical artist Polykleitos and datable to around 450 BC. The work was made in the period in which the artist was active in the Peloponnese and probably depicts Achilles with a spear. To make it, Polykleitos proceeded to a series of measurements of young people until he found a mathematical module, which linked the various anatomical parts. Scholars consider the Doryphoros to be one of the greatest examples of ideal perfection and beauty.
