Lost wax bronze casting.
Perseus is a hero of Greek mythology, son of the beautiful Danae and Zeus and famous for defeating Medusa, a monstrous creature with snake hair and the ability to petrify anyone who looked into her eyes. Cellini represents a victorious Perseus holding the head of the defeated Medusa raised, a glorious sculpture, seen by many as a celebration of Florence, as the work is placed in the famous Piazza della Signoria. This scale reduction is a faithful replica of Benvenuto Cellini's original masterpiece over two meters high. Benvenuto Cellini represents the hero in the moment of greatest climax, after having performed the exemplary deeds of killing the Gorgon Medusa. In fact, he holds in his left hand the head of the newly decapitated Medusa by the asserted hair and in his right hand he instead carries the sword with which he accomplished the feat, given to him by Minerva.
