Cain and Abel panel from the Gates of Paradise - Cain and Abel

After Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Paradise, their children, Cain and Abel, labour in the struggle to survive in their new world. Abel, who is favoured by God, is depicted as a shepherd, whilst Cain is shown toiling in the field. Abel is disconnected from the earthly realm and rests his head dreamily as he watches over his sheep, in contrast with the obvious drudgery of Cain’s life. Cain’s jealousy only grows as they both offer God a sacrifice but God accepts only Abel’s lamb, rejecting Cain’s sacrifice of poor-quality crops. The panel’s story culminates in the first-ever murder.
