For Aliki by Emmanuelle Capatos

Inspired by the medieval tradition of continuous narrative, the scene within this symbolic stilllife painting begins with Adam and Eve in the abundance of the Garden. A wreath of signs of decay separate the Garden from the outside, manmade world, and the floral rhythms lead the eye to the root of it’s origin:
The focal point, the betrayal in the taking of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, takes the form of an opened book, scattered with torn pages and teetering over the table edge. Built on this destruction, towers of books fall behind as a future premonition of the Biblical events to come. Symbols of the tower of Babel, Daniel’s Apocalyptic visions, and more hide in the shadows. And yet more signs of hope are found, leading the eye back to the Garden, a prophesy of the prosperity to come.

This cyclical narrative aims to serve as a reminder that no destruction can separate life the from a return to restoration: from life, to life again.
