Lilith by Marco Franco

In the Jewish tradition, Lilith is the first woman — not born from Adam’s rib, but from the same earth, equal to him in origin and dignity. When ordered to submit, she refuses. She utters the Ineffable Name of God and leaves Eden. She commits no sin, breaks no commandment: she simply chooses not to remain where equality is denied.

In the myth of Adam and Eve, freedom and knowledge arise only through transgression: humanity becomes aware of good and evil only after disobedience, and wisdom comes with guilt. It is the paradigm of morality, where the rule precedes choice and goodness coincides with obedience.

Lilith, instead, acts before and beyond this scheme. Her freedom does not stem from sin but from an inner principle: she affirms herself as origin, not as exception. Thus the moral myth of Adam and Eve finds its counterpart in Lilith — the myth of ethics, where consciousness is born from self-determination, not from command.

Lilith does not oppose the law: she surpasses it.
Not to destroy, but to found.
For only where the rule does not constrain, does ethics begin.
