Somno by Maudie Brady

Revealed in the work ‘Somno’ is the pain the artist felt when faced with the original panel of Cain and Abel, which represents the timeless suffering caused by humans slaying each other.

The artist brings into focus the female figure of Eve, and her grief at the tragedy of finding one of her sons dead by the hand of the other.

Although almost invisible compared to the central unfolding narrative, the story of Eve, the original Mother representing Nature, struck and inspired her.
The sculptor models her helplessly grieving, her hands covering her face, the body of her son sinking into the ground on which she kneels. Her hair blends with the earth surrounding Abel’s face, suggesting an unbreakable maternal bond. She is devastated and unable to look upon Abel’s lifeless face, mourning all that which is lost in anger, competition and fear of the other.
The sculpture, modeled in clay and reproduced in acrylic resin with a hand-painted patina, retains some of the visceral texture of the original raw clay surface. The title ‘Somno’ represents the sleep of death and the silent return to the earth.
