Moses receives the ten commandments:
God commands Moses and Aaron to climb up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. At the upper right Aaron is showing kneeling and covering his eyes just below the top of the mountain. At the summit God and the angels descend in a whirlwind to bring Moses the Ten Commandments.
The people of Israel are amazed:
In the foreground, the tribes of Israel gather in front of their tents in amazement and fear of the mountain rumbling and the flashes of thunder and lightning.
Special Notes:
Although the figures in this relief are very crowded together, Ghiberti made them seem very individual by varying their movements and poses. Figures bend and crane their neck trying to catch a glimpse of Moses receiving the tables of the law up on top of the mountain.
