"This too shall pass” depicts King Solomon as an old man near the end of his life contemplating a simple golden ring. The painting follows an old folk tale:
One day King Solomon wished to test his trusted minister and tasked him to find a magic ring that would make a happy person sad and a sad person happy. The Minister searched for such a ring for months, but to no avail. One day full of despair he told a poor merchant about his seemingly impossible task, the merchant went into his house and returned shortly after with a simple golden ring with words engraved into it. Overjoyed, the minister rushed to the palace to hand the ring over to the king. The sceptical Solomon first smiled at him in disbelief, but upon reading the words his smile disappeared suddenly. On the ring was written: “This too shall pass.”
