Greek divinity of ancient origin and of multiple nature. In Homer he is identifiable as the master deity in archery and hunting, designated as the one who dominates living beings and, at the same time, who can decree their death. In Roman times the cult of Artemis is identified with that of Diana.
The statue of Artemis of Versailles, at the Louvre Museum, which we know through a Roman copy of an original by the sculptor Leochares (4th century BC), shows an example of her classical iconography: the goddess passes wearing the short chiton and cloak rolled around the hips (in order to facilitate its stroke) while the right hand is carried backwards to extract a dart from the quiver and the left holds a deer by the horns. In some images the goddess can carry, in addition to her usual attributes, a torch, a typical iconographic element of Hecate.
