Herculaneum Runner

Lost wax bronze replica from original mold.

Author: unknown
Period: IV century B.C.

The original masterpiece is now located inside the Naples National Archeological Museum.
The statue was found together with a twin statue inside the courtyard of the magnificent Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, near Naples. It depicts an athlete winning during the ancient Olympic Games. There has always been in the course of time a long debate on which discipline the athlete is representing, whether a wrestler in a defending position, even though the excessive inclination of the torso and the little mobility of the feet do not seem so appropriate to a wrestler, or more probably a runner because of his thin muscles and his position forward as if he is about to start running.
