This beautifully hand carved replica of Boy with Rooster is by the Florentine sculptor Adriano Cecioni (1836-1886), who was also a famous painter and caricaturist. He studied art at the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts and during his career was highly influenced by the Napolitan artist, with whom he associated when he moved to Portici, near Naples. During his enterprising life he also lived in France and London, where he worked as a caricaturist for the periodical Vanity Fair.
The Boy with Rooster was executed in circa 1868 and the masterpiece is now hosted in the Gallery of Modern Art in Pitti Palace Museum, Florence. The sculpture depicts a little boy who, having tied up his little car to the leg of the rooster, tries to pick up the rooster in his arms, and gets terribly scared when the rooster opens up his wings in an attempt to fly away from the boy. The expression is that of a terrified and screaming boy holding tight to a scared rooster trying to escape.
The piece was exhibited in 1870 in Paris, receiving the most enthusiastic welcome and acclaim from critics and Cecioni was defined the most 'in fashion' sculptor of that time.
