Antonio Canova (Possagno, November 1ยบ th 1757, Venice, 13 October 1822) was a sculptor and an Italian painter, he was one of the major exponent of the Neoclassicismo in sculpture and nicknamed for this "the new Fidia."
Lions were part of the gravestone of Clemente XIII, Basilica of St. Pietro, Vatican. Sets on the first level basamentale, they allegorically represent the strength, and they protect the door from access in the sepulchre.
