The statue of the Quadriga was created by the English sculptor Adrian Jones, who specialized in animal depictions, especially horses. He created the sculpture “Victoria descending on the War Quadriga,” on top of the Wellington Arch in Hyde Park Corner in London.
Wellington Arch was conceived in 1825 by George IV to glorify British victories during the Napoleonic wars. The arch is equipped with a single arch, and employs the Corinthian order. Originally, the structure had to be embellished with a series of ornaments, but these were not realized following a review of the expenses implemented by the King, who intended to raise funds to complete Buckingham Palace.
The work of Jones depicts Nike, the winged goddess of Victory, in the act of descending with her warrior coach. At charioteer was given the features of the son of Lord Michelham, at the time just eleven years old, while in the figure of the angel of victory is amenable Beatrice Stewart.
