Lost wax bronze casting
The sculpture was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, who had been fascinated by a ballet adaptation of the fairy tale of Andersen, the story of the unhappy mermaid who dreams of being able to walk on dry land to reach the man of she fell in love, thus sacrificing her life in the sea.
It was created by the sculptor Edvard Eriksen who used his wife as a model.
