Little Marzocco after Donatello - Little Putto Verrocchio

This couple of artworks was realized by two of the greatest Renaissance masters: Donatello and Verrocchio.
The first artist carved the Marzocco, a lion resting its paws the crest of Florence, a red lily. The animal, due to his strength and power, symbolizes and protects the city. Having a lion in one’s home could be the guardian for a peaceful life.
Verrocchio, Leonardo’s master, realized the “Putto with dolphin” (now in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence). The putto is a chubby male child, usually naked and sometimes winged. He was a classical motif during Renaissance.
