This beautiful statue is a reduced in scale faithful replica of the gigantic Neptune developed by Giambologna for the city of Bologna, Italy.
The Neptune surmounts a fountain, that of Piazza Maggiore, the main square in Bologna.
His bronze figure, extending his arms in a lordly gesture towads stilling and controlling the waters, is an early work of the master of Renaissance, who had earlier lost the commision for a fountain of Neptune for the city of Florence.
