Hippo Odalisca by Bjorn Okholm Skaarup

The Danish artist Bjørn Skaarup realized a series called “Carnival of the animals”, from the musical suite of the same name, written by the French composer Camille Saint-Saens, which transform animal attributes into music. The artist creates a world full of joy and delightful humour.
The hippo adopts the sensuous pose of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's celebrated painting, “Grande Odalisque”. Native to Egypt and the Near East, the hippo becomes here a whimsical translation of Ingres's flamboyant orientalism.
