Bear on a ball by Bjorn Okholm Skaarup

The Danish artist Bjørn Skaarup realized a series called “Carneval of the animals”, from the musical suite of the same name, written by the French composer Camille Saint-Saens, which transform animal attributes into music. The artist creates a world of joy and delightful humour.
For centuries, dancing bears were a popular part of old circuses, especially in Eastern Europe. Here the bear is dressed as the celebrated Ballets Russes dances Vaslav Nijinsky, balancing on a Faberge egg. The figure also recalls classical allegories of Fortune, the goddess of fortune, who showed her fleetingness by balancing on a ball.
