Efebo Bust

Efebo bust is a sculpture of Policleto, datable to 450 BC. and know only from later copies. Efebia was the legal Efebo status of young people on the first step of enlistment (today's “recruits”), who exercised under the control of the state. Efebia was therefore the first step for adulthood and sanctioned the exit from childhood.
This sculpture represents the bust of a young man with the body structure that is certainly polycletean. The supporting leg is the left, a unique case among the Policleto sculptures. The right leg is instead flexed and carried forward.
Among other things, it was proposed to recognize the young Kynèskos in Efebo, winner of a boxing competition at Olimpia. Regarding the dating it should be kept in mind that, probably, the authors of the frieze of the Parthenon (datable between 445 and 438) were inspired by the sculpture, certainly famous in antiquity.
