Michelangelo was celebrated as one of the greatest artists of all time. He was an architect, a painter and a sculptor. His most famous artwork is the David, Renaissance and Florentine symbol. It’s considered one of the most beautiful sculpture in the world.
David was a biblical hero who defeated the giant Goliath. He was often represented after the fight, with Goliath’s head on his foot.
Michelangelo decided to represent him before the fight, when he was totally concentrated. He’s gaze was focused on the target, while his hand is firmly holding a sling. The other half body is relaxed, following Polictelo’s canon, which described how a perfect and naturalistic human body’s representation should be.
The myth says that Michelangelo was able to see the figures inside marble blocks and he started to sculpt with the aim to release them. The David’s marble block was very hard to carve because it was tall and tight, it was already carved and very fragile.
The statue should have been located in front of the Dome, but then it was decided to move it in Piazza della Signoria, where now there’s a copy, whereas the original is in the Galleria dell’Accademia.
