Appenine by Giambologna

Lost wax bronze casting.

Nice replica of a gigantic and incredibly famous piece of sculpure by Jean de Boulogne, called the Appennine.
The Appenines are the mountain range at the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, a region north.
The gigantic proportions of the limestone original sculpture by Giambologna meant exactly to reproduce the dimensions of this monolitc block of mountains and its geographical importance, in the microcosm of the park of the Medici Villa in Pratolino.
The Medici Villa in Pratolino was one of the biggest and magnificent villas erected by the Medici Family during their long dinasty.
It was unfourtunately abandoned at the death of Francesco I de' Medici in the eighties of the 1500, and almost totally destroyed towards the 1800.
The Appennine is one of the few original pieces of work that has survived till today.
