In the dramatic moonlight and rugged terrain, Abel is taken by surprise by the enraged Cain. These are the final seconds of Abel’s life as he is struck down by his envious brother. The image is shrouded in darkness. Some moonlight shines through the branches of a barely noticeable tree in shadows while dark clouds roll ominously across the sky. The viewer is engulfed in a terrifying atmosphere, yet the silence of nature leaves a haunting trace of inevitability.
This piece is violent, shadowed, and jarring. It does not deny the darker side of human nature, but addresses it, draws it out, and confronts you with it. The violence shows a missed step in the origin of the fall of man. Here, the fall is uncensored, brutal, and demands accountability, it forces you into facing your own shadows, whatever they may be.
