Creation of Adam:
The story begins at the lower left of the panel. According to the narrative of the Genesis, God
created Adam in his own image. Four angels hover above God the Father. God gives life to Adam by blessing him and raising him from the earth out of which he was fashioned.
Creation of Eve:
Ghiberti illustrates the creation of Eve in the center of the panel. Adam lies on the ground
alongside a flowing stream. Angels raise Eve from Adam’s side, while other look on in adoration as God the Father holds Eve’s outstretched arm, bringing her to life with his blessing.
Temptation in the Garden:
Ghiberti shows Adam, Eve and the serpent at the left of the relief in a lush garden. The serpent
tempted Eve to pick a piece of forbidden fruit. Adam raises his left hand to object but joins his right with Eve in front of the serpent.
Expulsion from the Garden:
Having disobeyed God’s command, Adam and Eve realize that they are naked and cover their
genitals with fig leaves. Ghiberti shows a crowd of angels and God the Fathe in the sky compelling an angel to drive the cowering pair out of the arch entrance of the garden.
