God tells Abraham his wife will have a son
The story begins on the left where three angels approach Abraham to tell him that his aged wife Sarah will bear a child. Sarah stands in the door of the tent behind the group, looking at her abdomen in disbelief. Abrham was said to be one hundred years old when he had his son. A row of tall trees marks the edge of the scene.
God tests Abraham’s faith
As Abraham’s and Sarah’s son grew to boyhood, God tested Abraham’s faith by commanding him to sacrifice his son. He took his donkey and two servants to a mountain to prepare a burnt offering.
The sacrifice of Isaac
Abraham stands at an altar atop a large mountain. At the altar, he raises his arm to strike Isaac, but an angel intervenes by grabbing his wrist. The angel gestures to a ram, which was sacrificed in place of his son.
