David da Bernini - Reduction in scale of the David after Lorenzo Bernini

The David is a sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, executed between 1623 and 1624 and exhibited in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
Bernini resumed a biblical myth already treated by Donatello, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Andrea Verrocchio. The Renaissance David, however, deals with the moments following the death of Goliath, thus portraying a meditative hero, relaxed and satisfied with the success of the enterprise. On opposite site, Bernini distances himself from traditional iconography by choosing to depict David in the instant preceding the stone's throw against Goliath.
It is in this way that the chisel of Bernini gave life to a work full of dynamism, in line with the Baroque poetics. The great concentration of David, about to make a gesture that could completely change the fate of the battle, is in fact reiterated by numerous details, all carefully studied by Bernini. The hero's face has an angry expression in the effort to gather the energy needed to hurl the stone, and the arms are contracted on the sling. The gaze is directed towards the target, while the lips are tightened by the effort.
At the feet of David are instead places the armour of King Saul, dropped because it is too heavy, and a harp that will be played after the victory. It is significant to note that the musical instrument ends with an eagle head, an explicit message of dynastic exaltation of the family of Scipione Borghese, commissioner of the work.
