Don Quixote is a Spanish novel, a masterpiece of the history of literature, written by Miguel Cervantes in the late Spanish Renaissance published in two volumes (in 1605 and 1615). His main protagonist is a man of about fifty years old, strong in body, but with skinny face, a hidalgo of the lower nobility named Alonso Quijano. He develops an obsessive interest in medieval history and chivalric poetry. The readings condition him to such an extent as to drag him into a fantasy world, in which he is convinced that he is called to become a wandering knight. He then sets out on a journey, like the heroes of the novels, to defend the weak and repair the wrongs. Alonso becomes the knight Don Quixote of the Mancha and begins to travel around Spain. In his madness, Don Quixote drags a local farmer, Sancho Panza, to whom he promises the government of an island as long as he is a squire.
In this sculpture the old gentleman is represented before he decides to embark on his own adventure as the last knight of the modern world, engaged in fierce battles against wind mills and flocks of sheep.
