Janis Cepuritis

Janis Cepuritis, a figurative painter from Latvia, described himself as having always been drawn to psychological themes and polarizing topics, specifically death, suicide, and interpersonal relationships. In his own life, he experienced lots of premature death and suicide. Cepuritis comes from a post soviet country riddled with cognitive dissonance, he was born deep in the rural areas where east and west and the soviet block had all run their course. His family runs the biggest suicide awareness NGO in Latvia as a result of losing a couple of close family members, which has impacted his work. He loves to examine different states of mind, and is particularly fond of how we rationalize death. He considers himself a part of death positivity movement. He does, however, love to contrast that sort of idea with a light and colorful visual language. His greatest inspirations have come from Alphonse Muchas Slav Epic. The whole Art Nouveau with Mucha in the forefront encapsulate the feeling he is striving to deliver with his work- harmonious, brilliant colors and pieces that inspire a similar sense of awe and delight as a beautifully cut gemstone would. To achieve this, he relies on harmony, composition and storytelling - tools tested and proven by time. He is an avid believer in creating the kind of art, that takes a lot of work, skill and knowledge to come alive. The kind of art that can be created by few, but is instantly understood by many, instead of the kind of art that can be created by many, but understood and related to by a few.
